If you’re a medical practice who’s ready to utilize the power of video, we applaud you — and we want to help you do things right! Today we’re going to share some tips on how to record videos that will engage your current and prospective patients, as well as search engines.

What types of videos should you make?Shoot your own videos

Patients and search engines love:

  • Informational/educational videos: Show off your knowledge by explaining or showing a procedure, or talking about a product or service.
  • Patient testimonials: Ask a patient to do a testimonial. Good prompts include: How does the practice make you feel? Tell me a little bit about Dr. ______. How has this practice helped you?

10 tips on recording good video footage

  1. Designate a content-creator. If possible, put one person in charge of video creation. This will automatically add some consistency to the videos.
  2. Choose a great environment. Find a place in the office with the following: 1) a closed-off space to minimize outside noise and distractions, 2) a clean space that won’t have clutter or PHI in the background or surrounding the subject, and 3) natural light that shines on the subject, if available.
  3. Prop up your phone, have a team member hold the phone or get this easy-to-use tripod for cell phones
  4. Hold the phone horizontally/landscape to record the video.
  5. Keep the phone at eye-level with the person speaking.
  6. Have space around the subject (top and sides) to allow for flexibility when editing. Super close-ups aren’t necessary! It is good to have space in order to change dimensions and edit for different uses on social media.
  7. Avoid privacy violations. If a patient is to be recorded, make sure they have already signed the Photo Release form to avoid privacy violations.
  8. Do multiple takes, if necessary. It’s OK to record more than one time! Record as many times as you need to get what you want across. Good videos can take time based on how comfortable the speaker is in front of the camera.
  9. Take a deep breath and have fun with it!
  10. Learn how to brand, edit, optimize and share your footage, so that it gets seen by your current and prospective patients! (Or bring us on board to handle that part for you!)

At Virginia Creative Group, we encourage our medical practice clients to be as involved as they want to be in video creation. Some of our practices create their own video content and send it to us — so we can edit the video, add their practice’s branding, optimize it for search, and share it across all social media platforms.
