MEANINGFUL MARKETING MOMENT | July 2021

As medical practices, you and your surrounding community are intrinsically and imperishably connected. You rely on your community to build and develop lasting patient relationships, and your community depends on you for your expert care. That bond is already a strong foundation, but there are always fresh, meaningful methods to engage with your community in new ways.

One such method we’d like to share with you is the Little Free Library movement. The trend originally began with the Little Free Library nonprofit organization founded in Hudson, Wisconsin in 2009 with the goal of inspiring readers and strengthening communities.

With over 100,000 libraries across the world, many of us have seen these adorable small libraries as we drive around our community. A little larger than the average mailbox, these little libraries hold free books for any age about a variety of topics. Members of your community can take one of these books for free, but most importantly, they will also add their own to replace it, passing them on to new readers and creating a cycle of book sharing with your other patients and neighbors. Notebooks can also be left inside the little library so individuals can share their thoughts about the books they’ve read with the rest of the community!

Becoming a little library “steward” is an amazing way to engage with your community in an easy, actionable and adorable way. As an added benefit, these libraries actively promote literacy and reading skills by making books accessible to everyone. You can build your own little library, buy one online or even buy some second-hand. You can even register your Little Free Library on the nonprofit organization’s website, where it will show up on the world map with a description of your practice for others to find! This helps put more eyes on your practice and helps you stand out above the crowd to potential patients as they pass your practice on their day-to-day journeys.

This month, think about the ways you can engage with your community in ways that are mutually beneficial for everyone involved. These Little Free Libraries are just one way you can strengthen your bond with your patients and the community at large while introducing some love and joy into their hearts, but it’s a great one to consider now as we’re heading into the new school year. Little Libraries help your practice grow and flourish and solidify your place as an essential part of your community!
